Bring Christmas to the village children and support the opening of the Aquarium of the Amazon.

Help me raise funds that will bring Christmas to the village children and support the opening of the "Aquarium of the Amazon".

Hi all,

I wanted to do something good and make the world a better place. When I found out that the majority of the children from the villages surrounding the research center do not have Christmas I wanted to help. Approximately 40% or $4000 of the monies raised will be used to host the annual Christmas party for these children. For many children it is the only Christmas they know. We will hire a clown and if possible one or two superheroes. We do not have a Santa Claus because it is impossible to explain that Santa Claus only comes to homes with money. Each child will receive a small gift, cake, punch and has a lot of fun.

The remainder of the money will be used to help support the grand opening of the Aquarium of the Amazon. The Aquarium is designed to be a center of environmental education for children and adults alike. Visitors will learn more about the aquatic life and challenges of the Peruvian Amazon River Basin. The Aquarium will sponsor a Junior Conservationist program that partners with the local schools.

As I learned about the continued encroachment into the Amazon River Basin where more and more natural resources are becoming endangered I knew I had to help. It is estimated that approximately 10,000 people make a living through the capture and selling of ornamental (aquarium) fish to the worldwide aquarium trade. For years it was believed that these smaller fish reproduced in sufficient quantities that they could be harvested without consequence. We now know that is not true. Between the overfishing and the ongoing destruction of natural habitats the enduring sustainability of the Amazon Rain Forest and its associated waterways is coming into question.

That's why I created a fundraiser to support the Amazon Research Center for Ornamental Fishes. Their commitment to bring Christmas to the village children and their work to provide a center of environmental education via a public Aquarium makes a difference. Help us to provide education and alternatives so that the peoples of this region are better able to care for their natural resources.
